Fast And Furious 6 review

furious 6-01

Fast and furious 6 picks up where Fast five left off. Mia (Jordana Brewster) gives birth to a baby boy named Jack, Brian (Paul Walker) and Dom (Vin Diesel) leave crime and want to settle down to live a normal life, and Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) is determined to hunt the team that hijacked a military convoy led by Owen Shaw (Luke Evans). Hobbs persuades Dom to recruit his team (again) to hunt down the Shaw, by showing Dom what he wanted. Letty is alive and well. Dom, with Brian, Tej (Ludacris), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Gisele (Gal Gadot), and Han (Sung Kang), goes after Shaw and gang. What results is a roller coaster ride that digressed a lot from the original premise which was primarily about racing.

Fast and furious 6 is basically a repetition of everything we saw in the last 2 films. The only difference is that, in this case, there is better resolution and far better teamwork. The character depth has become better. The biggest attraction of this film is that it redeemed the biggest controversy related to the previous two films, the depiction of women. Apart from having a single woman on a team who is reduced to a sidekick or love interest, this film featured 4 kickass women and even gave Mia the platform to show off despite being a damsel in distress. Letty’s depiction is the best improvement so far. She suffers from amnesia yet she goes against Shaw and his ideas even call out to his lack of humanity. However, by the second half, she is sidelined. Gisele and Riley (Gina Carano) have had their moments. We have women doing the same action as the men due to the representation and this is never visible in any other fast and furious film.

The action scenes are painfully exaggerated and visibly the film intends to go for the explosions and noises rather sticking to the original premise. Many expressed how much they missed the races and car designs. However, the advantage of the fast and furious series is that we never get bored. The film offers something or the other that interests you despite sticking to the old school additions everything that attracts the male audience, including male gaze. Vin Diesel stuck to his alpha macho man image. Dwayne Johnson is entertaining to witness but he has had the biggest WTF moments from the movie when jumps from a moving van onto a car and not break a single bone. Paul Walker has improved since his chocolate boy image. He is sensitive and emotional. FF6, on the other hand, marked the beginning of sidelining Brian’s character into a background or extra in Dom’s world. That’s the one thing I despised about the subsequent sequels. The fast and the furious is about Brian being an undercover cop, trying to nail Dom. Now, he is reduced to his own story. Brian does have the opportunity to stand up but it is not fruitful. Jordana Brewster sticks to her nurturer image, nothing more or less. Gal Gadot is adorable in her role and she makes Gisele likable although she has less screentime. I was happy to see Michelle Rodriguez back as Letty, as I was kind of pissed off when she was killed in Fast and furious. Justin Lin tried to bring something new but his focus is more on the action element rather than the story arc.

So, I guess if you are a die-hard fan of the series then you will love Fast and furious 6. If you are looking for girl power then these characters will take you on for a ride. But otherwise, the film is just repetition of Fast Five and Fast and furious, with a similar tone, action, background, and storyline.
