Kung Fu Panda is the 2008 blockbuster animation film which earned popularity among young as well as aged audience members, due to the lovable characters, humor and memorable quotes; which are used to treat patients suffering from depression and PTSD. This film helped many in terms of finding resolution and inner confidence. Having a fat panda in the lead with intense passion for Kung Fu is entirely new for the generation.
Po (Jack Black) is a big fat Panda working with Mr Shen (James Hong) who adopted it, doing a job that it loathes; in a restaurant although Po has a massive appetite. Po is aspiring to learn Kung Fu and fate brings it before Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) one of the best Kung Fu teachers in the world, also the trainer of the warrior squad the furious five; Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Viper (Lucy Liu), Crane (David Cross) and Mantis (Seth Rogen). Tai Lung (Ian McShane) is a hardened warrior which lost its place due to its treachery, cruelty and ambitious nature. It comes to attack the peaceful valley and Master Oogway (Randall Duk Kim) chooses Po as the dragon warrior, a panda which had no previous experience in Kung fu over the furious 5.
The premise is funny and chuckle-some when you think about it. A panda is chosen as the lead Kung Fu warrior, introducing an innovative concept since Pandas are already an endangered species. Po is an adorable character which looks cute and delightful.
The combination scenes with Master Shifu are endearing to watch. The movie is funny, touching and has great action, the animation team have taken good effort to create realistic environment. Hans Zimmer introduced perfect score to introduce the world of Kung Fu and China. We will have the tendency to look at the real animals after watching this movie, to check the resemblance. The lighting, texturing and editing worked well for the movie’s flow. The story takes the kick followed by adorable characters, although the premise is cliched; a hardened villain comes to attack a place and there’s the chosen one who could defeat him. Humor which follows every instance puts the audience in a light mode and this movie could be viewed several times. I myself saw it countless number of times owing to the fact that this movie is a perfect mood enhancer. The scenarios in this movie helped a lot of people as it made their day. Though, there are some cliches, like Tai Lung shown as a typical heartless villains, the concept related to “chosen one”; we’ve seen that a lot, star wars, matrix, Harry Potter etc.
There are several clever editing which adds its cherries to the humor aspect. Like the scene where Po is trying to get a view of the furious 5 and the moment where Po is declared as the dragon warrior and the reactions to it. Jack Black did a perfect job in voice modulation, so whenever I hear his voice, Po’s face comes into my mind. Dustin Hoffman embodied Master Shifu with his gruffy voice, same goes to all the supporting cast members. Angelina Jolie added her strength to Tigress’s personality so you will love her no matter how mean or tough she is. The team work of the furious 5 is adorable and vivacious, which is better developed in Kung Fu Panda 2. My favorite character is Mr Ping and its relationship with Po, adding a heart warming essence to the story telling and, two words, Master Oogway!
Kung Fu Panda has all the elements for a perfect summer entertainment, especially for those who enjoy animation. This movie is best among the series due to its depth and for being original.
